Instituto Perene

Fulfilling the goals of sustainable development.

Instituto Perene is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded on January 10, 2007 with the objective of developing socio-environmental sustainability projects in rural communities in the Recôncavo Baiano. With the involvement of new funders and community leaders who believed in the purposes of Perene, the projects were expanded to the states of Tocantins, Goiás and the Federal District.

From the beginning, the actions are based on a tripod that unites forest conservation, sustainable livelihoods and eco-efficient kitchens, the latter being the basis that sustains most of the actions. Replacing rudimentary wood stoves, which are harmful to the environment and health, with eco-efficient stoves, a transition technology for ideal models of cooking equipment, was the principle of Instituto Perene.

The projects are built in the regions served with the involvement of local leaders from the first stages, guaranteeing communities a leading role in the actions and respecting the sociocultural aspects involved in the activities. This dialogue also counts on the participation of public and private institutions, the academic community and other social actors in a democratic way, aiming at the common good.

The instituto Perene aligns its projects with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with deliveries that meet SDG 13 – Combating Global Climate Change. In this context, a project is also being carried out in partnership with researchers from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ), which can contribute to achieving the goals of SDG 3 – Health and Welfare.

With a trajectory based on high standards of project management, commitment to the communities served and a vision of the future focused on the SDGs, Instituto Perene is expanding the scope of projects. The perspective of growth remains anchored on the tripod: environment, sustainable life and eco-efficiency and, above all, having communities, their cultures and real needs as protagonists of local development.
